Shut Up & Write

You love it. You loathe it.
Either way, you can't help yourself. You are one of us.
(You are also a masochist. But that's OK.)

Struggling (and more often fighting) writer by trade, and office monkey when I need to pay my bills. It's an enviable life.
I know, you're probably a little jealous now.
It's perfectly understandable.

Tookie's last hours...

Stan "Tookie" Williams is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection at 12:01 a.m. While technically that's tomorrow (Tuesday), the excution will be held tonight.

Last chance lies with Governor Arnold.

Looks quite possible that the clemency plea may be disregarded. Hope I'm wrong about this one.

(LATER)

My instincts were right. Schwartzenegger has decided that Tookie should die at 12:01 a.m.

sorry to rain on your crusade, but i strongly suspect you’ve never had to watch as someone struggled with all their might and being to hang on to a life that somebody had tried to take from them. and watch as they lose their battle.

to deserve mercy you have to be capable of showing it BEFORE you need it yourself. anyone who believes they can atone or redeem themselves against their denial of one second of another man’s life has no right to walk amongst us. no right at all.

/hg...I know you've been following this closely, and I'm sorry it went this way. It upsets me, too.

Regardless of the truthfulness of his reform, he was doing enough good to be recognized for it, which means he was more valuable to the world alive than dead, if one wants to look at it that way.

I always find it mystifying when people use an argument about the sanctity of human life to justify taking one away. It makes me ill.

ill? then you need me by your side…

*ro rushes over and slaps michael back to consciousness*

that was fun :-)

there is no mystery. if you take a life you forfeit the right to continue with your own.

the only dilemma lies in the position of the executioner, and that was not the subject under discussion.

Wow, Ro -- you must be pissed that you were born after the European Convention on Human Rights.

(You know, you use The Doctor Clause quite a bit. I had a nasty argument with someone in high school who used The Clause as a reason for making abortion illegal.)

Execution is an act of revenge... pure and simple. No human has the right to decide that another should die... even if they deserve it.

pissed? i’m mortified. i’m pushing for a repeal.

the doctor clause has validity, if only because it should be based upon first hand experience of certain facets of human life or death. abortion is an unbelievably vile act. yup, the doctor clause again. when was the last time you snipped up a foetus?

the loss of your life is the price you pay if you choose to take the life of another. the person taking the life makes that choice. he determines his own fate, as do we all. he can always let the other guy live, walk away and go eat a burger.

We'd best avoid the abortion issue, my friend.

Because I very much disagree with you, and I'm not silly enough to try and change your stubborn, set-in-stone mindset.

But the very wrongness of your wrong is quite wrong indeed.
